December! It can be joyful and heartwarming, it can be annoying, lazy, drunken, and depressing. No matter how you feel about this time, it will happen and we will get through it…

Three years ago, on Dec 6th, 2020, I lost one of the most important people in my life to suicide. I met Rose when I was 9 months old and we were best friends until her passing - she was 27. Like many in that club - Rose was simply an icon. She was the first artist I ever knew and truly believed in. She was fabulous and silly. She felt and thought deeply about the world and craved love, beauty and justice. The companionship and sisterhood we shared is one of the most beautiful things I have known.

Grieving her has been a profoundly painful and beautiful process. Since she left us, I have struggled to find my footing without her in life, in my relationships, in my writing and music (hence the long wait for LP2). I know that sharing this record is a necessary step in the healing process and I’m incredibly excited for its release.

As a life-long witness to Rose’s brilliance and sensitivity, I saw how they went hand-in-hand with her struggles. Rose and I rarely kept secrets from one another, but in my music I found myself trying to illuminate some of the darkness she held that seemed beyond the reach of my love for her. I recently found a voice memo of a song I wrote quickly for her in 2017, after forgetting to get her a birthday present. I’m known to write pretty sincere (bordering on heavy-handed) birthday cards, so this was 2017’s version of that.

I’ve decided to share Any Other Way with you all on her yahrzeit - a day on which I mourn her deeply but also celebrate our beautiful lasting love. I’m singing and playing guitar through the same amp and recording it on my iphone 7 or something so… the quality simply sucks - but I felt a need to share it with the world and with her again, wherever she is.

If you’ve gotten this far, thank you for indulging me. Rose’s story is an all too common one and I know there are so many who struggle themselves and/or feel the holes in their hearts around this time of year. I’m sending much love and strength to those going through it - it passes, I promise.

Here’s to hoping we are able to embrace levity, joy and gratitude where we can this winter.
